Con esta serie de artículos me propongo compartir temas de interés para los nuevos participantes en el mercado mayorista de electricidad de México, así como para las compañías del sector eléctrico que están considerando su participación, ya sea directa o indirectamente, y para todos aquellos profesionales que tenemos un interés común en los mercados eléctricos.

Estos artículos no tienen como objetivo dar una versión exhaustiva de conceptos u operación del mercado, ya que considero que para ello existe material fantástico del CENACE con sus cursos y manuales del mercado. Mi objetivo es acercarme a temas de interés desde el punto de vista de los participantes del mercado, y utilizando la experiencia acumulada en el ya más de un año de operación del MEM, y mis quince años entregando soluciones a participantes en el resto de los mercados eléctricos de América del Norte.

Parte 1: Ofertas en Mercados de Corto Plazo

Esta es la primera parte de una serie de cuatro entradas sobre los procesos críticos de negocio de un Suministrador Calificado

Los suministradores calificados son participantes en el mercado que representan centros de cargas de usuarios calificados y tienen como modelo de negocio el suministro de la energía a los centros de consumo a un precio competitivo y con un servicio de calidad.

Un suministrador calificado firma contratos de suministro con clientes de carga para proporcionarles energía, potencia, certificados de energías limpias (CELs) y servicios conexos. El suministrador, a su vez, adquiere estos productos en los mercados administrados por el CENACE, de las plantas de generación propias, y a través de contratos bilaterales con generadores u otras entidades.

El siguiente diagrama muestra a gran nivel la relación entre el suministrador, sus clientes, el operador del mercado y otros participantes:

Es importante remarcar que, en algunas circunstancias, el suministrador calificado también puede representar a generadores en el mercado, como sucede con los generadores exentos. En este caso, el suministrador calificado realiza actividades adicionales que no son muy diferentes de las realizadas por los generadores participantes en el mercado, de las que hablaré en uno de mis siguientes artículos.

Son muchas las actividades que tienen que realizar los suministradores para la ejecución con éxito del negocio de suministro. Con base en nuestra experiencia, los siguientes son los cuatro procesos críticos de negocio para los suministradores calificados:

En esta entrada de blog describiré las claves de la creación de ofertas de compra en los mercados de corto plazo, dejando para entradas futuras los procesos restantes.

Creación de ofertas de compra de energía en los mercados de corto plazo

Los suministradores calificados tienen la posibilidad de enviar ofertas de compra de energía para los centros de carga que representan en el mercado del día en adelanto (MDA). Las ofertas de compra cuentan con un componente fijo (cantidad en MWh de compra para cada hora), así como de un componente sensible a precio (cantidad en MWh que el ofertante está dispuesto a comprar a un precio definido en $/MWh).

Todas las ofertas tienen que ser enviadas al CENACE antes de las 10 de la mañana del día anterior al día de operación para su consideración en el proceso de asignación del MDA.

Los principales retos de los participantes del mercado en la creación de ofertas de compra de energía son:

  1. Definir estrategias de oferta que representen las necesidades del suministrador y estén en consonancia con su política de gestión de riesgos. Por ejemplo, el suministrador debe decidir:
    1. Qué porcentaje de la demanda comprar en el MDA vs. El MTR (mercado de tiempo real)
    2. Qué cantidad de energía ofertar al precio de mercado, y cuánta a un precio preestablecido.
  2. Contar con pronósticos fiables de demanda y precios MDA para cada una de las cargas directamente o indirectamente modeladas representadas en el mercado.
  3. Automatizar el proceso de creación de ofertas con base en las estrategias de oferta y los pronósticos de precios y demanda.
