In the ever-evolving energy landscape, efficient data management and reporting can make or break operational success. When one of our clients — a public power utility serving over 500,000 customers — needed a solution to streamline their reporting and settlement processes, they turned to PCI Insights. This collaboration resulted in the first-ever hosted deployment of PCI Insights on PCI Kube, setting a new standard for data integration and accessibility.
The utility’s transition to PCI Insights was driven by the need to replace slow, manual reporting processes with a more automated, integrated approach. By leveraging PCI Insights, the utility gained access to faster reporting, seamless data integration, and improved settlement workflows. This case study explores how PCI Insights revolutionized their approach to data management, the key challenges they overcame, and the powerful new capabilities they unlocked.
The challenge: overcoming reporting bottlenecks
Before implementing PCI Insights, this public power utility faced several challenges with its reporting capabilities. Their existing reporting tool was slow, manual, and required extensive effort to generate key settlement reports. Additionally, data was exported into CSV files and transferred via SFTP, leading to inefficiencies. To enhance performance, they needed a solution that could:
- Automate manual reporting steps
- Improve speed and accessibility of settlement reports
- Integrate seamlessly with their existing systems, including Power BI and Tableau
The solution: PCI Insights on PCI Kube
To address these challenges, PCI implemented Insights as a hosted solution on PCI Kube. This deployment not only modernized their data reporting but also provided enhanced capabilities for real-time data analysis. The key benefits of this implementation included:
- Faster data access: By centralizing all data sets into a single repository, the utility could retrieve critical information within seconds instead of hours
- Automated reporting: Insights replaced the manual CSV-based reporting process, reducing operational overhead
- Seamless integration: PCI Insights integrated with the utility’s Power BI and Tableau platforms, allowing for a more intuitive and efficient user experience
Key use cases: unlocking new efficiencies
The implementation of PCI Insights at the public power utility introduced several high-value reporting and analysis features:
1. Price trend analysis
One of the standout capabilities of PCI Insights is its ability to conduct price trend analysis. By aggregating real-time and day-ahead pricing data, the utility can now:
- Identify price fluctuations at 15-minute intervals
- Compare real-time prices against day-ahead market trends
- Optimize decision-making based on pricing signals

2. Enhanced invoice validation
The utility’s settlement process previously relied on extensive manual validation. With PCI Insights, they now leverage an automated approach that:
- Combines invoice statements with settlement data
- Breaks down charge codes by unit and settlement point
- Streamlines the validation process to ensure accuracy

3. Unit offer tracking & version control
A unique requirement from the utility was the ability to track variations in unit offers submitted throughout the day. PCI Insights now allows them to:
- Store multiple versions of submitted unit offers
- Compare historical submissions to resolve disputes
- Enhance transparency in bid submissions

4. CRR net congestion report
Combine front office data (CRR quantity), settlement data (RT meter, settlement change codes) and ETRM deal data (deal price) to build a comprehensive CRR net congestion report for month-end closing.

Lessons learned & future improvements
While the deployment has been a success, there were key takeaways from the project that are shaping future implementations:
- Performance optimization: The volume of settlement data required PCI’s engineering team to refine indexing strategies to maintain optimal speed
- Client-specific customizations: Many of the utility’s reporting needs were unique, reinforcing the need for flexible, client-driven development approaches
- Expanding front office data sets: As more clients adopt PCI Insights, additional front-office data points will be prioritized based on project needs
What’s next for our client?
The public power utility continues to refine and expand its use of PCI Insights. Ongoing efforts include:
- Enhanced congestion cost analysis: New calculations integrating LMP and settlement data
- Expanded front office data reporting: More granular tracking of market transactions
- Deeper integration with Power BI and Tableau: Allowing for even greater visualization and data storytelling capabilities
PCI’s collaboration with our client exemplifies how modern data solutions can drive operational efficiency and decision-making in the energy sector. As the industry continues to evolve, PCI Insights remains at the forefront, helping market participants navigate complex data challenges with ease.
