“The electricity ‘tri-lemma.'”
Our utility clients are confronted with what many have called the energy “tri-lemma” — the challenge of keeping the balance of electricity access and affordability, reliability and security, and environmental sustainability. This challenge has never been more pressing.
In this blog post, I’ll provide insights into: decision-making strategies to navigate complexity, asset optimization tactics, and market participation best practices. These are just some of the practical solutions you’ll discover at INFOCUS 2024 for addressing today’s most pressing energy challenges.
Overcoming today’s energy challenges
As the North American Reliability Council (NERC) has noted, we’re operating within a “hyper-complex risk environment” characterized by extreme weather events, the retirement of traditional power plants, integration of renewables and distributed energy resources, evolving energy policies, incremental load growth, and increased level of cybersecurity threats.
While most organizations remain optimistic about the possibility of reliably operating electric systems with a low-carbon footprint, achieving this goal demands significant investment in technology and use of regional diversification through organized RTO markets. The reality we face is stark: The transition to a more sustainable energy ecosystem is fraught with complexity, and sacrificing system reliability is not an acceptable trade-off.
For our clients, navigating this transition isn’t about preparing for a distant future state of the grid; it’s about actively managing the transition itself. While promising technologies such as small modular nuclear reactors and long-duration battery storage offer potential solutions, they are not yet deployed at grid scale. Instead, our clients find themselves dealing every day with a landscape that feels more like an addition than a transition — balancing traditional generation methods with emerging assets like batteries and a growing proportion of renewables in a power grid that was originally designed for a different reality.
What’s in store this year
With less than 60 days until INFOCUS Conference 2024, our eagerly anticipated annual conference, we invite you to join us as we celebrate our partnership with clients and showcase practical solutions to today’s energy challenges (our conference theme, after all, is “Meeting Today’s Challenges!”).
At INFOCUS, you will hear from keynote speakers and fellow PCI users as they share insights into their own transition journeys, utilizing PCI software to navigate complexities and drive tangible outcomes.
Our objective is that you will gain valuable perspectives on addressing the energy “tri-lemma” head-on.
